A PIGEON travels hundreds of thousands of kilometres on countless flights in a lifetime.

But for the Fraser Coast's newest hero, Saturday's 245km journey down the Bruce Highway, to his hometown of Caboolture, will always be remembered as one of his best.

Little Homer - the pigeon.

He was supposed to have completed the trip with his 19 brothers and sisters last weekend.

Owner Harry Graham had driven to Maryborough with his pigeon enthusiast mates and released his 20-strong flock as part of a race - it was going to be a hoot.

The birds were supposed to be in the coop waiting when Mr Graham returned.

They were supposed to have known their way home.

But Homer didn't make it.

He got lost, would have died too, if not for the concern of one Fraser Coast resident who handed him to a caring vet, who in turn contacted the Chronicle, inspired by previous stories about un-homed pigeons.

On Saturday, Homer and Harry were finally reunited when Chronicle photographer Alistair Brightman, during a trip to Brisbane, drove Homer home.

The Coast vet had previously tracked Harry down.

"It's always good to get (a lost pigeon) back," Mr Graham said.

"Most times you don't know what happened to them and it's good to see people are concerned."

Earlier, Mr Graham said: "If he comes back, he's a good pigeon, if he doesn't, he's not".

Well, that's settled.
