While the audience was a bit thin at the start of the night, Max Watts in Brisbane continued to fill as we got closer and closer to main act, Lacuna Coil and by the time enigmatic band hit the stage there was a healthy audience clapping, chanting and screaming.
The gig opened with Flynn Effect who did an interesting intro of bass and drums which then kicked into their first song. Flynn Effect were a great addition to the night as they had a proggy vibe on drums and bass but then an ephemeral haunting beauty to the vocals.
Tomina Vincent had a charming range that hit all the right notes and touched on a slightly gothic folk vibe underscored by pop sensibilities and a hard rock edge. Fans of 'Dead Can Dance' might pick up those Celtic nuisances in her vocals which are amplified by the chugging slightly nu-metal guitars. It is encouraging to see the wealth of talent in the Brisbane music scene and the range of acts, including Awaken Solace who supported Apocalyptica recently.
Flynn Effect were a welcome addition to the evening.
Next up was Orpheus Omega and after gracing the stage as supports for Trivium there was a certain expectation that they were going to kick the evening up a notch.
After relentless touring this band is in a total groove and being the final show of the Lacuna Coil tour you could see that they utterly comfortable and had a commanding stage presence. It was great to see Keswick Gallagher on keyboard have no technical difficulties like at the Trivium gig and he let loose with very strong commanding stage presence.
Unfortunately bass player Nathan Mesiti had food poisoning and like a true champion played the gig sitting on a chair. Half way through the set he ducked behind the curtain I am assuming to unleash a torrent of stomach contents into a bucket - all the while bass still going.
Chris Themelco continues to impress bashing out guitar licks and vocals with perfect ease and commanding the audience into a focus ball of metal fury. This is a well toured band who's blistering chops, syncopated riffs, and tricky melodies combine to form a wall of sound that is both complicated in its construction but brutal in its delivery.
After what seemed like a long delay Lacuna Coil hit the stage. The band exploded in white jump suites, faces painted, stage lighting rocketing around. Cristina Scabbia had a stage presence which centred the focus, anchored the band and just held everyone's gaze.
Her dynamic focus and explosive energy with now flashing red hair made it hard to watch the rest of the band. But in all honesty the rest of the band were just as exciting and dynamic to watch. Andrea Ferro certainly played the part of mad man well with his wild eyed gazing into the crowd and cooky head movements.
The jump suites splattered in blood were a really nice touch that didn't feel forced or clichéd.
The sound was perfect and the dual melodies of male and female vocals contrasted nicely against a backdrop of thundering drums, bass and guitar.
The band's total command of the audience and venue was impressive to watch and made for a supremely enjoyable main act. This was Lacuna Coil's first headline tour of Australia and hopefully judging by the audience reaction we will see them do more tours of Australia.
There was a healthy contingent of songs of the new album including 'Ghost in the Mist', 'Blood, Tears,Dust', 'Downfall', 'Delirium' as well as other songs like 'Spellbound', 'Victims', 'Our Truth' for the longer term fans.
The set was tight, the lighting was great and the sound on point.
