A NEW survey shows that beard loyalty is rife amongst Aussie guys, with one in five willing to risk their partner, girlfriend or marriage (21%) and even their job (18%) for the sake of their facial hair.

The Nivea For Men Shave It or Save It Report, conducted by Lonergan Research, found that even important occasions wouldn't discourage the follicular love, with men refusing to shave to try pick up a girl (46%); if asked by their boss (41%); for a promotion (40%); for their own wedding (34%); or if asked by their partner (32%).

Although it's generally okay in the workplace, of all professions, Australian men find chefs (48%), police (37%) and bankers (31%) the least acceptable to have facial hair, compared to designers (13%) and sportsmen (15%).

Laziness looks to be the main reason for the follicular fascination, with more than half of Aussie men admitting this was the main reason for having a beard (54%), and the majority of those who've had a beard agreeing the process of shaving was a chore, just like mowing the lawn (83%).

And all this beard loving does come with a darker side - jealousy.

Nearly one in five Aussie guys become green with envy at a good looking guy with a beard (18%) or a celeb rocking great facial hair (17%).

Leading the way on the list of most favored follicles is fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman (20%), followed by George Clooney (19%), Russell Crowe (12%) and David Beckham (8%).

The bad news for guys is that beards don't receive the same level of loving from the ladies.

More than two thirds of Australian women find the clean-shaven look more sexy (68%) and 74% would prefer to lock lips with a clean-shaven man.

Beard loathing extends further on first encounter, as more than half (52%) of Aussie women would be put off a date by an overgrown beard.

This is second only to poor hygiene (93%), on par with turning up late (52%) and more off-putting than bad dress sense (37%) or bad shoes (19%).

Would you shave off your beard if your partner asked you to?
