Repeat Coast paedophile begs for protection in jail

A REPEAT "paedophile" who scarred a 12-year-old Sunshine Coast boy for life and had a child with the boy's mother has asked for extra protection in jail.

The man, who cannot be named, has been sentenced to seven years in jail after being found guilty of sodomising and indecently treating the 12-year-old boy.

The Brisbane District Court heard on Friday it was the third time the man had fronted court for sexually assaulting young boys.

The court heard the man met the Buderim family and formed a relationship with the mother.

The man sodomised his partner's son at their Buderim home and while on holiday.

The victim was subjected to the horrifying crimes between May 2010 and March 2011.

Crown Prosecutor Ben Power explained the man came unstuck when his partner came home from the hospital after giving birth to their baby and found her son in a strange mood.

In her victim impact statement tendered to the court, the mother said it then "all came out" prompting her to go to police.

"I have become isolated and shamed I did not pick this up and put my child in danger," the mother wrote.

The victim's grandmother explained the traumatising effects the treatment had on her grandson.

The victim was abused by a paedophile, "a very clever one at that", she wrote.

Mr Power said the man showed no remorse for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy.

Defence barrister Tony Kimmins explained his client suffered from a number of cognitive conditions.

"His time in custody would be harder than an average prisoner," he said.

But Judge Brad Farr was not completely convinced and said he would trust the correctional services officers to ensure the man's security.

Judge Farr sentenced the man to seven years in jail and pointed out the most recent crimes had escalated from his past offending.

He said the man's motivation for continuing the relationship with his victim's mother was to continue access to the child.

"(It was) a gross breach of trust of the child and the family," he said.

"You preyed upon him and advised him this was normal behaviour."
