Snake snitchers take python

TWO teenage girls turned snake snitchers at a Toowoomba pet shop at the weekend.

Everything Animal owner Sean O'Donohue was working out the back of his store when two girls reached into the reptile enclosure and pocketed a 20cm-long spotted python.

He was baffled by the theft - not only because reptile larceny seemed out-of-character for teenage girls, but because the store had nine security cameras in full view of the serpent-nappers.

"I don't know what was going through their heads," he said.

"We have cameras everywhere so I'm unsure why they thought they'd get away with it."

Mr O'Donohue noticed one of his five non-venomous spotted pythons was missing soon after the thieves left the store.

"You can see them on the video watching each snake to choose which one was moving the least," he said.

"Then one of them reached in and put the snake in her pocket."

Each spotted python retails for $230.

Mr O'Donohue has provided police with security video of the theft taking place.

"It's honestly the first time anyone has stolen a snake from me since I've owned the store," he said.

"I'm not worried - now I just have to wait until they're caught."
