Trevor's shock win on old ticket

SELF-confessed Rainbow Beach Hotel regular Trevor Ansell never dreamed he would own his very own Harley-Davidson motorbike.

"It was way out of my league, or so I thought," he told The Gympie Times.

But yesterday he took possession of a Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 883 in front of a crowd of his mates at the hotel.

To win the bike, Mr Ansell had to play a Keno ticket, something he did every day, and enter the replay competition.

He admitted he was not trying to win a bike, instead he had his eye on a Harley backpack.

"It was drawn on Sunday and a local won it (the backpack), I thought that's it.

"Then Adam rang me."

Mr Ansell was so shocked by the win he did not believe it.

What he said to Rainbow Beach Hotel manager Adam Rummery can not be repeated in this publication.

"I thought he was having a go. I still can't believe I am the owner of a Harley-Davidson."

The retired beach wormer and keen fisherman said he had a motorbike licence once - he used to ride when he was in his early 20s - and was still deciding if he would try to renew his skills.

"It's been 40 years since I've ridden a bike."

However he will have a "putt" around at home on the $13,000 prize and has not ruled out cruising around the coast.

Mr Rummery said he was excited that a Rainbow Beach local won the bike, one of three given away in Queensland.

"He didn't believe it at first, then he was chuffed," he said.

"I didn't believe it either."

Mr Ansell said he had called Rainbow Beach home for the past 11 years but had owned a house there since 1978.

"I was a professional beach wormer for a number of years up Rainbow Beach and Fraser," he said.

"Now I'm retired."

While only the second Harley competition, it is fast becoming an institution for Keno players - hundreds entered in Rainbow Beach.

Keno sales manager Paul Carew confirmed thousands of players across the state had entered the draw.

"All they had to do was replay an old Keno ticket during the competition," he said.

"Only last month, one of Keno's biggest ever major jackpot winners won a massive $3.36 million simply by replaying his Keno ticket."

The classic motorcycle was one of six given away by Keno across New South Wales and Queensland.
