The Coolum Beach Hotel has escaped a glassware ban.
The Coolum Beach Hotel has escaped a total ban on the use of glass products on its premises despite a show cause notice issued in October.
The hotel was one of 77 pubs and clubs throughout Queensland investigated over glassing or violent incidents.
Eight venues were last week classified as “high risk” by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) but none is based on the Coast.
These high-risk venues will not be able make regular glass receptacles, jugs, bottles or stubbies available to patrons but will have to use alternatives such as toughened, tempered or polycarbonate glassware.
Though their names have not yet been released, 29 other hotels investigated will have special licence conditions imposed.
These conditions range from a ban on glass in bars (but allowing it in restaurants) to having to submit a risk management plan to minimise risk to patrons.
Liquor licensing minister Peter Lawlor said venues were being notified by OLGR of any changes they needed to make.
“But the majority have already started making those changes and I commend them for that,” Mr Lawlor said.
The minister said glassing was an horrific act of violence which often caused permanent injury and scarring.
“Glassings destroy lives and it’s a situation that is just unacceptable,” he said.
“While there is no doubt that individuals must take responsibility for their actions, licensed establishments also must realise their responsibilities to patron safety and harm minimisation.
“The Queensland government is determined to tackle alcohol-fuelled violence – this is about keeping people safe.”
OLGR officers will incorporate checks on glass use as part of their normal compliance activities. Penalties of up to $10,000 may apply to venues that fail to comply.
The venues have 28 days to appeal the OLGR decision.
