Japan-bound kids real karate deal

TWO karate kids from Coolum are heading off to Japan next week to compete and train at the home of their sport.

Caitlin Jones has been training in the art of Shotokan karate for more than four years and Shotokan Karate instructor Michael Allen said the 14-year-old would soon challenge for her black belt.

“She has a natural ability for karate, and the attitude to boot,” he said.

Michael’s son, Harrison Allen, has been wearing a dogi (karate uniform) since he was three years of age.

The 13-year-old grew up around karate and has never been far from his father’s side.

“Harrison’s understanding and skill level in karate is immense for his age, and he is no stranger to hard work,” Michael said. “He graded for his black belt in Japan under strict tutelage during the two years he lived there.”

Caitlin and Harrison will travel to Japan, along with some senior members, to compete in a tournament and train with world-class instructors there.

Harrison will also challenge his nidan (second black belt grade) while in Japan.

“The intensity of training and high skill level in Japan will test the two Coolum Karate Kids and, unlike the movies, this is the real deal,” Michael said.
