Juniors impress in surf classic

THE annual Yaroomba Classic ran last weekend in not classic, but well and truly contestable surf.

There was some fantastic surfing going down, particularly from the junior surfers with a good little bank supplying rippable lefts and rights.

Dane Hamilton took out the Open Men’s title and The Rod Marshall Memorial Shield by the tightest margin seen for years over Trevor Tripcony.

The surfing in the final was outstanding. Dane and Trevor have five of the last six titles to their credit, dominating the opens for more than half a decade.

Dane also got a second in the Senior Men’s, with Morgan Dittman edging him out to win the division.

Critta Reynolds took the Masters Trophy home, with Pete “Rune” McNamara finishing second. Rune made up for his second with a win in the Legends’ division, with Mick Grace second.

Jake Colreavy won the Juniors with some inspired surfing, edging out Eli Criaco.

Jack Duggan finally brought some of his free-surfing skills to a comp and won his final to win, with Izak Clifford’s backhand attack earning him second.

Nik Callister lapped up the lefts to win the groms, while Davey Wallace, who still has at least two more years in this division, took out second place.

Sophie Callister won the Girls’ division with her great backhand attack from a rampaging Jaleesa Vincent.

Naomi Stevic made it two in a row with her win in the Women’s’ division, with Isabella Nicols finishing a strong second.

Jaleesa Vincent stepped out of older brother Jake’s shadow to win the crumbed sausage event.

Aaron Horsey is still prying barnacles out of his board after the wipeout of the weekend.
