THE latest name to emerge in the NRL's betting scandal has links to Rockhampton rugby league circles and the Comets.

Weekend southern media reported Danny Price, brother of new St George Illawarra coach Steve Price, tried to place the biggest exotic bet on the infamous Cowboys-Bulldogs game last year.

Sydney's Sun-Herald reported Danny Price tried to bet $15,100 that the first point scored would come from a North Queensland penalty goal.

The bet, along with $25,074.04 of other wagers on the same option, was rejected and Price was allowed to bet only $1700.

It should be known there is no suggestion Price had done anything wrong by having the bet.

The Morning Bulletin can reveal Price was a member of the Rod Reddy-coached Comets team in 2000.

He also played for Rockhampton club Fitzroys during his time in CQ after moving north from Sydney.

Some of Price's ex-team-mates in Rockhampton yesterday described the former goal-kicking and ball-playing forward as a "talented footballer who had a wretched run with injuries".

He played for the Comets in the club's two big pre-season trial games in 2000 against NRL sides Canberra and Parramatta.

Price, now 31, has since made a name for himself in the boxing ring in recent years.

The Revesby boxer, who goes by the alias "Dangerman" Danny Price, was the main support on the undercard for Billy Dib's recent world title defence in Sydney.

The current WBU cruiserweight champion boasts an imposing record after 14 professional fights, with nine wins - four by knockout - three losses and two draws.

The Morning Bulletin's attempts to contact Price were unsuccessful yesterday.
