GONE FISHIN' with Davo's

THE fishing in the Sunshine Coast region has been great lately, with plenty of anglers heading out and enjoying the quality fishing that's been on offer.

In the Maroochy River, whiting have been extremely active around the last few hours of the run-out tide, with reports of some good-sized models being caught on both surface lures and live yabbies.

A popular place to target a few of the bigger whiting is the clear shallows around Chambers Island, and being so easily accessed from the land makes it a very popular spot.

Further up-river, mangrove jacks have been active around the mouth of Coolum Creek, with the bigger models being caught during the night.

There is a definite trend of throwing soft vibes for these awesome fish, with one of the most popular lures being the new Fish Candy Paddle Vibe. This lure creates a lot of action on both the lift and the drop so it's perfect for covering plenty of ground.

On the offshore scene, mackerel are still in huge numbers just out from Old Woman Island, with plenty of long tail and yellow fin tuna also thrown into the mix. The most effective method for fishing this area has been trolling high-speed, hard-bodied lures around the schools of birds and bait fish, as well as casting and retrieving metal slugs.

The winner of the Davo's fish of the week prize this week goes to Jeff Evans who caught this spanish mackerel around Old Woman Island. For your chance to take out the Davo's fish of the week prize, simply drop by the store with your catch of the day and you're in the draw.

For all the local advice on where, when and how to fish the Maroochy region, be sure to drop by Davo's Northshore Bait And Tackle on David Low Way, Marcoola.
