Aussie divers aim for medals

GOLD Coast schoolgirl Brittany Broben put together a diving lesson of her own at the Aquatic Centre this morning, progressing through to tonight's final of the women's 10m platform as a real medal chance for Australia, alongside Beijing silver medallist Melissa Wu.

Looking to take a step from the 10m platform to the podium, the 16-year old from Marymount College scored 81.60 points with her second dive and followed it up with a 76.80 with her favoured third dive, an armstand back double somersault with one and a half twists.

Less than 10 points behind China's Ruolin Chen with two dives to go, Broben produced a closing dive of 76.80 to head into tonight's final ranked third overall, with a total of 359.55 points, with Chen finishing on 407.25 points.

I got a little excited on the fourth dive, but everyone makes mistakes and that was one minor mistake. I'm just going to go out there tonight and give it my best," said Broben.

"I think all of these divers had the final in mind and it's not a competition if you don't think you are going to make the final."

For Melissa Wu, who started the semi-finals in fifth position, strong fourth and fifth dives saw her finish fourth overall just four points behind Broben, with tonight's final an opportunity to add to her silver medal from Beijing as all divers start from scratch in the decider.  Her total of 355.60 will also see her knocking on the door of the medals tonight.

"I basically just wanted to make the final and I did that so I'm really happy. I think I've had a pretty good preparation and I'm feeling fairly confident, but I just want to come away with five good dives in the final and that's my goal at the moment."

As the youngest member on the entire Australian Olympic team, Broben could become our first medallist in the dive pool, with Matt Mitcham and James Connor set to start their campaign tomorrow.

Tonight's final will start at 7.00pm at the Aquatic Centre will all 12 competitors diving five times each for a combined total score before medals are decided.
