Awards galore for golden girl Gilmore

AHEAD of tomorrow's launch of the Quiksilver Pro at Coolangatta, the golden girl of Northern Rivers surfing received three World Surf League (WSL) Awards.

Stephanie Gilmore, who grew up in Murwillumbah, was awarded WSL Women's Champion, Wave of the Year and Heat of the Year at the World Surf League Awards in Coolangatta on Tuesday night.

She was the only surfer to receive three awards in ceremony.

Gilmore was jointly awarded Heat of the Year for her performance against Tyler Wright at Bells Beach in April last year, which ultimately ended in Gilmore's defeat.

The world title holder, who has racked up more than US$680,000 in career winnings, said the awards will offer her a boost as the WSL 2015 season kicks off.

"Every heat last year was do or die," Gilmore said.

"The level of talent on tour has never been higher and the surfing has never been more exciting.

"To come away with a win in that kind of environment was incredibly rewarding on a personal level and it gives me great confidence heading into the year and women's surfing for the future."

Mick Fanning, who calls Coolangatta home, scooped up the WSL Men's Runner-Up award.
