Birdie blitz takes veteran Appleby up to second

Without a win since shooting a 59 in the final round to win the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia in 2010, Aussie veteran Stuart Appleby turned back the clock with a vintage performance in The Barclays.

The 43-year-old shot seven birdies in a final round of six-under par 65 to finish tied for second with fellow Aussie Jason Day and American Cameron Tringale at 12-under, two shots behind Hunter Mahan (pictured) who also shot six-under.

The result lifted Appleby from 98th on the FedEx Cup standings to 19th ahead of the second tournament in the series, the Deutsche Bank Championship which starts at TPC Boston on Thursday.

Seven other Aussies are eligible for the event after finishing inside the top 100 on the points table after The Barclays. They are: Day (7), Adam Scott (16), John Senden (28), Marc Leishman (36), Steven Bowditch (44), Matt Jones (54), Geoff Ogilvy (100).
