Coolum Boardriders Club won the prestigious Simon Anderson Premiere Club Award at the 2009 Australian Surfing Awards, held on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

The award recognises the club that has made a significant contribution in the area of club surfing during 2008. Criteria include administration, competition results and structure, environmental contribution, community involvement and support for junior and women’s programs.

Coolum is the first Sunshine Coast club to win the award, which has been going since 1998.

Coolum Boardriders president Chris Barraclough said he was “pretty stoked” with the win.

“It’s the top accolade we can get … for administration and structure,” he said.

Coolum’s Julian Wilson also won the Rising Star award. He was presented with his award by two-time world surfing champion Tom Carroll.
