SURFING: Julian Wilson's intentions were clear early in his first heat of the Billabong Pro Tahiti on Saturday, when he attacked the famed break from the outset.

The 28-year-old, who is eighth in the race for this year's world title after six of 11 events, was busy from the siren.

He caught four waves within minutes and by the time the heat was done, he'd had seven rides and won with a score of 12.77, overcoming Americans Conner Coffin (12.40) and Kanoa Igarashi (10.03) with several turns in relatively benign 1.5m surf at Teahupo'o.

"To sit and wait for them (good waves) is a much riskier move than to just get busy,” he told World Surf League.

"So..I just wanted to stay busy and roam up and down the line-up and I got some scores on the board and put a bit of pressure on.

"The other guys were maybe a little bit more selective but it ended up being a pretty tight heat in the end.”

The Peregian Beach prospect earned direct entry into round three.

"(I want to) definitely to do better than the quarter finals,” he said.

"I'd love to win this event but obviously it's one heat at a time. I have just got to keep good momentum going and make good decisions and I'll be there.”

After a relatively lacklustre start to this year's Championship Tour, Wilson has claimed solid results at South Africa and Fiji.

"(I am) coming off a couple of good results at the moment and I'm just trying to really pull my year together and just keep carrying this momentum,” he said.
