Coote drops in to clinch win

LACHLAN Coote was the hero with a drop goal in golden point extra time to earn Penrith a thrilling 13-12 victory over the Dragons at Centrebet Stadium last night.

The Panthers took the lead with a try in the 19th minute from Ryan Simpkins before Kevin Kingston charged over after a run from dummyhalf three minutes later.

Blake Austin converted both and the Panthers led 12-0 at the half-time break.

The Dragons fought back strongly and tries from Jake Maketo and hooker Mitch Rein, plus two Kyle Stanley conversions, sent the game into overtime, where Coote struck the winner three minutes in.

Captain Ben Hornby failed with a field goal for the Dragons in the extra period, but Panthers fullback Coote made no mistake with his 25-metre strike and confirm a first win in six games.
