Here's how Julian Wilson can win world title

SURFING: Many pieces of the puzzle will need to fall into place for Peregian Beach's Julian Wilson to claim this year's world title at the season-ending event in Hawaii next month.

The 28-year-old kept his chances afloat with a runner-up result in the penultimate event in Portugal three weeks ago, moving from sixth to fourth on the ratings.

A World Surf League official has told the Daily that Wilson needs to win the Pipe Masters, which he has in the past, and have other results go his way.

Most notably, he'll require leader and local hope John John Florence to be eliminated before round four.

He will then need Brazil's Gabriel Medina to be knocked out before the quarter finals and South Africa's Jordy Smith to be cast aside before the grand final.

"Sitting fourth. It isn't over until it's over,” Wilson said via social media.

"Really looking forward to getting back to Hawaii to see if we can make something happen there.”

Wilson's been on the championship tour since 2011. His best season-ending ranking was sixth.

Meanwhile, Keely Andrew's hopes of remaining on the women's world tour will also hinge on a campaign finale at Hawaii.

The 22-year-old is 10th on the ratings, with the top-10 to automatically re-claim spots on next season's circuit.
