Keys to beach safety

COOLUM Surf Club has taken possession of a new patrol vehicle to help keep our beaches safe.

The new vehicle was bought with a $19,090 grant from the Jupiter Casino community benefit fund.

President John Roderick said the club appreciated the donation, which would provide resources for its volunteer members.

"With the funds received we have been able to purchase a Suzuki motor vehicle, which is used to perform roving patrols to Stumers Creek and to transport equipment on and off the beach," Mr Roderick said.

The club also received $8141 funding this year for new training equipment and improved storage facilities.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said lifesavers did a great job of keeping our beaches and waterways safe and were worthy recipients of the funding.

"We have a host of amazing volunteers at our surf life saving clubs who make a valuable contribution to the Sunshine Coast community and especially to those who visit our wonderful beaches," she said.

Ms Simpson said not-for-profit organisations within the Maroochydore electorate had benefited from $535,820 in funding in 2013.

"Surf life saving clubs, Scouts, childcare centres, guide dogs, community centres and Vietnam veterans are just a few of the worthy recipients who have put funds to good use.

"These groups have used the funds to purchase vehicles and equipment, update facilities, run training courses and other things necessary to support the valuable work being done by the many volunteers in our community."
