Lindsay is the rose between two oddballs
FELIX Unger and Oscar Madison have been reincarnated for the 21st Century.
Friends star Matthew Perry and Reno 911's Thomas Lennon play the mismatched mates in the new American sitcom The Odd Couple.
The Channel 10 import sees the old university friends become unlikely roommates after the demise of their marriages.
Staying true to the original 1970s TV series, sportscaster Oscar is a laidback slob while Felix is obsessively neat.
"They definitely mirror that slightly in life, which is why they are so perfectly cast," Lindsay Sloane tells APN.
"They're both very funny, genuine and kind but that's where their similarities stop.
"They're genuinely mismatched so that makes them a perfect pairing."
Sloane plays Oscar and Felix's quirky neighbour Emily. She quickly forms a friendship with Felix and helps him adjust to his newfound life as a bachelor.
Perry is also one of the show's executive producers and writers and created the character of Emily with Sloane in mind.
The actors are friends after meeting on the set of the series Mr Sunshine.
"He called me and said 'I'm remaking The Odd Couple'," she says.
"He said 'I've kind of wrote the character thinking about you'. I read it and I said 'Do you think I'm kind of a crazy person?'"
Sloane told Perry she wouldn't sign on until he'd found his Felix.
"I was very, very flattered and I loved the idea of working with a friend … but I knew my storyline was to line up with Felix," she says.
"The intent was that my character would be harbouring a crush on him.
"As soon as he said Tom - I'd worked with Tom before - it was so perfect.
"All came together, as things so rarely do in Hollywood. My friend casting me in the show without having to audition for it was the icing on the cake."
Sloane describes Emily as a woman who's uncomfortable in her own skin.
"She's not so great at hiding her feelings because she's such a literal person.
"She's one of those people for whom nothing has come easy. She's grown up in the shadow of her super sexy older sister and there's a bit of a dark cloud hanging over her. Throughout the show she and Felix are these lost broken souls, who are somewhat uptight and neurotic, and they find solace in each other."
The series also stars Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Treme) as Oscar's agent Teddy and Leslie Bibb as Emily's sister Casey.
"The beauty of what the show is that it evolves into a true ensemble more so than the original show ever was," Sloane says.
"As a supporting actor it's been a total dream.
"The show is filmed in front of a live audience, and even if we're not in scenes we're on hand supporting each other. It's like watching a play every night."
The Odd Couple debuts tomorrow at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
