UPDATE: Park ranger killed by shark was working on CQ island

Update 9.55am:

THE 23-year-old man who was killed by a shark off North West Island was a Queensland Parks and Wildlife ranger performing work on the island.

Gladstone Police Senior Sergeant Tony Anderson said the man was with a crew of four rangers who were working on the island while it has been closed.

"At the end of the day there was four people swimming of the back of the boat cooling down after a day's work," Sen-Sgt Anderson said.

"This male person was the last person to get out of the water. As he was about to get on the boat he was attacked by a shark."

He said the man received treatment for his "substantial" injuries by the crew on the boat before the rescue helicopter arrived.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk passed on her condolences to the family of the victim.

"Once again a family is out there, is grieving for a young man who tragically has lost his life in a horrific shark attack," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"A lot of his work colleagues I understand are very upset today."
