SURFING: Alexandra Headland's Sophie McCulloch seized the advantage in the race for the Queensland women's title at Coolum Beach yesterday.

The talented youngster won the opening leg of the two-stop event with a composed showing.

The pre-meet favourite finished ahead of Piper Harrison and locals Holly Williams and Siena Hanna, with high speed manoeuvres.

"I've been working really closely with my coach this weekend and he helped decide where I should sit in the final which helped heaps," she told event media.

"I got lucky with two good waves at the start and that's all I needed."

Another solid showing in the second leg would help her secure a berth in the state team and a wild-card entry in the trials of the women's world tour event at Snapper Rocks next year, the Roxy Pro.

"I'd be stoked to represent Queensland again and I really want that wild card spot for 2018 so I'm looking forward to heading down to the Gold Coast in a fortnight," she said.

Currimundi's Terry Landsberg proved a force in the masters divisions.

He won the over-45 and over-50 men's sections, snaring a score of 9.50 on one wave in the former.

Other category winners at the HIF Women's and Masters were Andrew Doyle (over-35 men), Mark Richardson (over-40 men), Les Aberley (over-55 men) and David Cousins (over-60 men).
