MALENY'S Ainslee Gordon has found strength in numbers.

Ms Gordon recently topped the women's section of a major international strongman and strongwoman competition and said it was watching the weight numbers go up that drove her to lift.

"As the numbers go up, I think, 'I'll be happy when I lift that,' and then it's, 'How much more can I lift?'," she said.

Ms Gordon won the under 82kg women's section of the Static Monsters competition held late last month simultaneously at various locations in the world.

Her dead lift of 235kg on the Gold Coast set a new Australian record and her log press of 77.5kg - just over her own weight of 77.3kg - gave her a combined total of 321.5kg for the competition.

The total was not only the best in her weight class in the world but also bettered the totals of competitors in the open women's section.

Ms Gordon, a personal trainer and former runner, has been lifting seriously for about five years.

"The goal was to look good but then it was about the numbers on the bar, the weights going up, that got me more excited than anything else," she said.

"It's a really good way to gauge whether you're getting better or not."

Ms Gordon, who confesses that being active has always been her "happy place", finds lifting weights almost meditative.

"You get to switch off. Once you get your technique down, you can do it without thinking. You can switch off and you either get the lift or you don't," she said.

Ms Gordon is coached by Robert Reed, of Raw Power and Strength, and trains five days a week, juggling training with her work and her other role as mum of 10-year-old Tyler.

She said it took her a long time to think of herself as competitive in strength competitions.

"It took my coach a long time to convince me I was strong and strong enough to go up against some of these girls," she said.

"But once I decided to do it, I've just done it. It's fun. The people who are involved in strongmen and strongwomen (competitions) are really supportive," she said.
