Region to get 300-bed FIFO worker camp

OAKEY could become a fly-in fly-out workers' centre with plans for a 300-unit camp submitted to Toowoomba Regional Council.

Workers building the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing could be among those slated to use the camp, with the construction hoped to satisfy "an urgent need for temporary accommodation for workers associated with major infrastructure developments of state significance in the Toowoomba region".

The submission was made on behalf of workers accommodation firm Qantac, which is a partner in camps in regions including the Surat Basin and Central Queensland.

If approved, the facility will be built on a 24 hectare site between Beale and Gayle Sts on Oakey's northern outskirts.

The accommodation will be temporary, with plans to pull it down within three to five years after the completion of major road infrastructure works.

Construction is proposed to be undertaken in two stages.

The first stage includes 156 rooms, a dining/kitchen building, an administration building, an ablutions and first aid building, three laundry buildings, a gym and a recreation building.

The second stage comprises 144 rooms and two laundry buildings.

"The design and layout of the premises allows potential sources of nuisance and impact to be appropriately managed.

"This will ensure the development will not adversely affect surrounding amenity or cause environmental harm," the application stated.

"In addition, the development will not contribute to access, safety or circulation problems in the locality."
