Pies defender suffers injury setback

COLLINGWOOD defender Ben Sinclair has suffered another unlucky setback after scans confirmed he needs surgery on his injured left hamstring.

Sinclair hobbled off the ground in the third quarter of Thursday night's win over Essendon in the opening match of the JLT Community Series at Etihad Stadium.

The injury looked serious at the time and scans on Friday confirmed the 25-year-old suffered a serious hamstring tear.

Collingwood's general manager of football Geoff Walsh said Sinclair would undergo surgery next week, but how long his recovery would take was unclear until he was reviewed by his surgeon.

"Scans have confirmed Ben has suffered a reasonably serious tear," Walsh said.

"Surgery, probably sometime next week, seems likely but the precise details of when that might be and how long his recovery might take won't be known until he has seen the surgeon.

"It's a tough break for Ben, who has had more than his share of misfortune over his time. That said, he is a resilient and, of course, everything within his and our power will be put into seeing him back on the fiels as soon as possible."

The latest injury setback follows a frustrating 2016 for Sinclair, who had a string of concussions in 2016 when he played 13 senior games.

Hamstring problems also restricted his AFL appearances in the preceding two seasons. He has played 63 games since making his debut for the Magpies in 2011.

Collingwood's next match of the JLT Community series is against Fremantle on March 4 in Mandurah.
