POLL: Where would you like direct flights to from Rocky?

A READER asked The Bulletin to find out where other readers wanted direct flights out of Rockhampton Airport, other than Brisbane.

A post put on Facebook today had received 250 comments by 2pm, with a common request of Sydney, Melbourne, Townsville and Cairns, but there were many other locations, not just in Australia, that readers would like to have a direct flight to.

Here are some of the responses and discussion:

  • Laini Robinson - TOWNSVILLE at a reasonable price please!! It's cheaper to fly to Brisbane then up - how ridiculous!!
  • Kay Searles - Longreach , a lot of people from this district are sent to Rockhampton for medical treatment. Also a lot of children in schools in Rocky.
  • Patrice Kooistra - Go International. Rockhampton to Japan
  • Danny Williams - The problem is Rocky had direct flights to Melb and Sydney in the past, but not enough people utilised these services. How do you expect airlines to keep unprofitable services?
  • Chantelle Fraser - Every time I caught a direct flight from Rocky to Melb. the plane was packed. They were cheap flights and saves the hassle of waiting around or changing planes in Brisbane. Sooo many people used to use the direct flights to Melbourne.
  • Paul A. Hoolihan - Dream on. Flights to restore Rockhampton to its position as a regional hub, Longreach, and Central Queensland need flights.
  • Heather Eastwood - Melbourne, Townsville, Cairns, Sydney.... Keep the cost down so people can actually afford to travel within Australia (without lengthy stop overs!)
  • Elizabeth Cullen Hoolihan - Longreach via Emerald?
  • Kathy Turnbull - It wouldn't be a direct flight then.
  • Elizabeth Cullen Hoolihan - No it wouldn't, but it makes sense to do that and would probably be more financially viable.
  • Danny Williams - That would be similar to the Mt Isa to Townsville, via Cloncurry service. It would work.
  • JA Passmore - That sort of service would need state government support. We have not had a supportive state government of this region in 20 years.
  • Mandi Latcham - Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns, Townsville at least. Bit of a waste of tax payers money, in millions$ worth of upgrades and paid parking, if we can only go direct to brissy. We used to have Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns (before the upgrades). Even regional areas have heaps more for FIFO, but then, they're not looking at providing services to actually benefit the local communities that actually reside in these areas...
