Rangers routed as Spurs hit the top of the EPL

FOOTBALL: Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has backed fellow Argentinean Erik Lamela to continue his stellar form after the winger tormented QPR in a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane.

The victory put Spurs top on goal difference above Chelsea thanks to goals from Naced Chadli (2), Eric Dier and Emmanuel Adebayor as Harry Redknapp's men were put to the sword.

Lamela (pictured) struggled last season to get a place in the Spurs team, but has featured strongly in the team's opening two wins.

"Erik Lamela did well. It is never easy when you come to new country and you are young to adapt," he told BBC Sport. "He needs time to show his skill."

The struggles continued for Louis van Gaal's Manchester United in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland - the team's first point of the new season - while Hull City held on for a 1-1 draw with Stoke City despite having central defender James Chester sent off in the 14th minute.
