Resourceful women do it themselves

THERE’S a lot to be said for doing it yourself, according to Cassandra Fleming from the Fabric Palette in Gladstone.

“We’re seeing a lot of young people taking an interest in sewing and dressmaking, teenagers, young mums, people in their 20s and 30s mostly,” Cassandra said.

“There’s a resurgence, definitely. Knitting too,” she said.

Cassandra said ladies – and yes, it is still fairly much a female preserve – are taking up their knitting needles and embroidery crewels in greater numbers because they’re stylish and social and money is scarce.

“We get a lot of new people in town booking in for a sewing class or one of our craft groups because it’s a lovely way to get to know people from all walks of life,” she said.

Certainly cheaper than flying to Brisbane to shop for an outfit, Cassandra said a dearth of shops had made fashionable Gladstone gals more resourceful.

“People will go over to Vinnies and buy something and expand on it,” she said.

“They’ll take some of the trims we sell, alter something they already have, upgrade the accessories, and make the most beautiful outfits.”
