RIO 2016: Aussies set up Canada clash

RUGBY: Australia will play Canada in the Olympic sevens semi-finals on Tuesday morning (7.30am AEST) after a 24-0 win over Spain in the last eight.

The Aussies lost to Canada in the final game of the world series in Clermont-Ferrand earlier in the year but had already claimed the season-long series win.

The world champions are favourites for the inaugural Olympic tournament and showed why in their quarter-final clash with Spain.

Charlotte Caslick, who scored a hat-trick in the Aussies' big pool win over Colombia, starred as the side bounced back from a 12-12 draw with USA in its final pool game earlier in the day, only drawing level with a converted try after the siren.

Australia raced into a 12-0 half-time advantage with Emma Tonegato and Caslick touching down for tries.

Caslick put the result beyond doubt after the break with an 80-metre solo try before Ellia Green showed she she picked up against the Americans scoring a strong try right on full-time.

Great Britain will play New Zealand in the other semi-final.
