Search begins for new community centre site

Sunshine Coast council’s service delivery committee has supported the recommendation the Maroochy North Shore community centre project be put on hold until alternative potential sites are identified.

The move follows the refusal of a material change of use application by the department of natural resources for the current proposed site at 12 Menzies Road on environmental grounds.

Division 8 councillor Debbie Blumel said it was essential that the council investigated potential and more appropriate locations.

“It is important that we actively investigate similar sized locations in proximity to the original site,” Ms Blumel said.

“This could also include investigating any co-location opportunities including the Maroochy North Shore multi-sports as one potential site, which is located very close to the originally proposed site and is equally central to the communities being served.”

The council will soon be calling for membership of a community reference group for input into the progress of the project.
