Shock as boy forces puppy into ice water for challenge

THE RSPCA has condemned a "shocking" video of a teenager throwing a puppy into water in a cruel take on the ice bucket challenge.

The craze, which has been taken up by famous faces including Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Mark Zuckerberg and even George W. Bush, sees people film themselves being drenched in freezing water then nominating people to do the same.

In the 20-second video, the boy, reportedly from London, is seen holding the puppy as it tries to struggle free.

"Here's my dog and she's doing the ice bucket challenge," he says.

"She wants to nominate all the other dogs out there. And all the cats as well, yeah."

Holding the dog by the neck, he asks "You ready?" before dunking it into the bucket head-first with such force he staggers forwards.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said any responsible pet owner would be "shocked" by the stunt.

"The aim of the ice bucket challenge is to raise money and awareness for charity - this 'stunt' goes against everything it stands for," he added.

"It is likely that the puppy in the footage could have been caused distress, if not harm, and we are very concerned that others would think this is appropriate.

"Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is an offence under law and we would strongly urge people not to copy this video."

The condition is usually referred to as motor neurone disease (MND) in Australia, where the leading organisation is MND Australia.
