AN ELDERLY man was found dead following a fire in his retirement village home early Thursday.

Police cordoned off a small cottage at Redbank Palms Resort, on Kruger Parade, Redbank, as investigations into the 76-year-old's death started.

Neighbours who heard smoke alarms going off about 7am ran to the man's house to check on him.

Inspector Keith McDonald said the man was found alone, lying on the lounge room floor.

"The inside of the residence was extensively damaged," Insp McDonald said.

"The deceased man had some burn injuries."

Initial investigations suggested the fire extinguished itself due to lack of oxygen.

There were no windows open at the time of the fire.

Camira fire station officer Ray O'Brien said the lounge room - where the fire was believed to have started - was extensively damaged with smoke damage in other parts of the house.

There were no cooking devices in use, however some cigarettes were found in the lounge room.

Fire investigators attended with the Camira crew but they were yet to determine the cause of the fire.

The deceased man was said to have been mobile and in good health leading up to the tragedy.

He was last seen alive by other residents at the retirement village about 8pm the previous night.

The man had a relative living elsewhere in the village.

Redbank Palms management chose not to comment about the incident on Thursday.

A crime scene was declared just after 9am, with detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch and forensic officers beginning inquiries.

Police did not know what time the blaze started or how long the house may have been on fire before the alarms were activated and neighbours went in to investigate.

The man's next of kin were advised of his death Thursday morning.
