Defence says it will keep Oakey in loop

THE Department of Defence said regular information sessions would be held as it establishes how widely contaminated Oakey's groundwater has become.

"Landholders within the investigation area will (in August) be asked to respond to a survey about how they are currently, and have previously, used bore water," a spokesman said.

"The community was advised at the information session on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, that anyone who uses bore water for drinking purposes should contact Defence via the project phone line or email.

"Defence will work with each affected landholder individually to determine an appropriate management strategy for their individual situation."

The issue goes much further than just Oakey, with a Defence official stating the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and other organisations were keenly watching the process to see what implications it could hold for them.

Groundwater sampling will continue across Oakey in the coming weeks. Soil and sediment sampling will also be considered.
