A SUNSHINE Coast charity co-ordinator has warned residents not to give out their driver licence or bank details to door-knockers claiming to be collecting for the service.

The warning comes after residents in the Peregian Springs and Coolum Beach areas reported visits from people claiming to be collecting for the Salvation Army between 5.15-6pm on Thursday evening, and being asked for personal information.

Salvation Army community fund-raising and public relations coordinator for the Sunshine Coast, Leanne Harrison, said the Red Shield appeal ran from May 22 to June 4, and during that time collectors were only permitted to visit homes between 9am-5pm.

She said the charity was not permitted to door knock outside that two-week period, and said people asking for specific payment methods, like direct debit, should set off a red flag.

"If we go to a door we're asking for a donation, but how people donate is up to them,” she said.

"We wouldn't ask for credit card details.

"We can do direct debit but it has to be organised through our head office, not at the door.”

Ms Harrison said residents could phone any Salvation Army office around the Sunshine Coast we would be able to say immediately whether or not people were collecting in their area.

"If people are unsure please don't donate, and definitely don't give any direct debit, drivers licence or credit card details to anyone because we would definitely not be asking for it,” she said.

The Red Shield Appeal has finished, but the Salvation Army will still accept donations through the website at salvationarmy.org.au
