Why Coolum homes were left in the dark last night

NEARLY 1000 homes in the Coolum Beach area were shrouded in darkness last night as Energex crews scrambled to restore a power outage.

Power to 926 homes went down just after 6.40pm.

The lights came back on to 65% of those homes - 534 - just after 8pm, and the remaining 392 homes had their power back on just after 8.35pm.

Energex spokesman Will Cooper said the outage was caused by a problem with an overhead power line on Yandina-Coolum Rd.

"The cause of the issue is still under investigation,” he said.

"There was no immediate reason identified for the problem; it could have been impacted by wildlife that's cleared the line or something that has struck the line, but it's still being investigated.

"The timing obviously wasn't the greatest, being right on dinner time an and prime TV time, but service was restored to 65% of customers within about an hour-and-a-half.”
