SURFING: Peregian Beach's Julian Wilson says he's relishing the second half of the Championship Tour season.

The 28-year-old reminded pundits of his potential on Sunday, when he claimed one of the highest heat scores of the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

He defeated Brazil's Italo Ferreira 17.46 to 16.54 in round three of the event in improved conditions at Teahupo'o, after winning his round one heat a day earlier.

"It was a pretty slow start to the year but it feels so good to be making (it through) heats and to be surfing really good waves like this and battling against the best guys,” he said.

"I love it. It gets me excited.”

Wilson failed to finish higher than ninth in the first four events of the 11-stop circuit but he notched a fifth placing at Fiji and then a third placing at South Africa before moving to the Tahiti leg, where he has also impressed.

"I just want to keep this ball rolling. It feels good,” he said.

Wilson was scheduled to compete in finals day today, resuming in a non-elimination round four in the early hours of the morning.

He was in eighth place in this year's race for the world title leading into the event.

Meanwhile, fellow top-10 surfers Adriano de Souza and Felipe Toledo were bundled out in the early rounds
