SURFING: Julian Wilson's hopes of a maiden world title hang by a thread after finishing last in his round one heat at the penultimate Championship Tour event in Portugal on Tuesday evening.

The 27-year-old scored 11.40 to finish third in his three-man heat against compatriot Kai Otton (12.43) and American Nat Young (11.77) in the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

The result pitches him into a do-or-die round two heat, which is expected to be held late Tuesday or early Wednesday, conditions permitting.

Wilson is sixth on the rankings and needs to win the final two events on the 11-stop schedule and have a host of other results go his way, with significance on leader John John Florence failing to finish ninth or better in both events.

Wilson's best season-ending ranking is sixth, last year.
