KAILASH Bowen, 10, was running as soon as he could walk and now he's taking his skills to the Queensland State Championship for cross country.

Kailash said he had always been a keen runner.

"When I figured out how to run, I didn't really stop,” he said.

Mother Annie Bowen said Kailash was a natural.

"He could run before he could walk,” Annie said.

"We grew up on the beach and you have to get balance in soft sand.”

Annie said she was excited for Kailash to compete but was just happy to see him do his personal best.

"It's awesome that he keeps coming first in other races though, so he may go all the way to national championships,” she said.

But Kailash has his eyes on a bigger goal.

"You mean internationals,” he said, interrupting his mum.

The Bribie Island student has had no formal training and is both excited and nervous to take on the 2km track tomorrow.

"My strategy when racing the 2000m is probably just stay in the second bunch of runners and then, when people get slow, I just start getting in front,” Kailash said.

His tip for other kids is to simply practise.

Kailash will be competing tomorrow morning in Brisbane.
